There is a nice little book called The Cartomancer’s Key that tells the technique for doing this, with spreads and card meanings, as well as explaining a bit about how the cards work and why they are used so — I strongly recommend it for a beginner; but there is more than one way to interpret the card meanings. I heard one old hoodoo worker say to just turn up the cards, the ghosts of your ancestors will come and tell you what they mean.

Just doing a search online for “playing card meanings” will turn up several pages that can get you started.
