Professors, Especially Astronomy Professors, What Is Your Opinion on Astrology and WHY?
Chrissy asked:
<BR%20/>Tags: Astrology2, Professors, Masters <BR%20/>1 What subject do you teach?
2 Do you have masters or phd?
3 How long have you taught?
Make note that I have a background in astronomy so I can understand the lingo well. So, profs, feel free to talk away!
My former astronomy professor abohrs astrology, as a matter of fact. I am searching to see if ALL astronomy professors feel this way.

What does astrology have to do with astronomy?
Most people view it as entertainment nothing more. It really holds no validity in real life.
I don’t like astrology because there is nothing about it that makes scientific sense. There is also no scientific proof that can back up Astrology. What astrology is based upon is the movement of Earth along the Ecliptic (the path of the sun along the background of the stars in the sky as viewed from Earth). The Earth revolves around the sun in 365 days. In a given month, the sun will be seen within the background of a certain constllation. Whatever that constellation is, which corresponds to the month of your birth, determines your sign in Astrology. So, in my opinion, if astrology is just based upon the position of the sun along as it path along the ecliptic, there is no significance to astrology. Therefore, signs and horoscopes make no sense and are just based upon seasonal changes.
1. I used to teach Astronomy and Physics
2. PhD
3. 3 + years
Astrology is not a science and thus is not taught in Astronomy. It is used many times to teach students the difference between a pseudo science and a real science.
If you don’t mind me asking, why would you be asking astronomy professors for their opinion on astrology? It just seems a bit far out!!
But you may have your own reasons for some kind of research I guess.
I just would have thought that professors of a specific subject would be much more wrapped up in the matters of that subject as opposed to a totally different subject.
I don’t really think we should be viewing astronomy and astrology as mutually exclusive subjects – you can study and take an interest and also even practise both – if you are lucky enough to have the time and brain power!
Good luck with your exploration though. Incidentally I do know of one astronomy professor who is also an astrologer – Dr Percy Seymour is his name and he is (or certainly was) a professor at Southampton I think.
1) I have taught astronomy and physics at the college level.
2) I have a masters degree and am completing a PhD in physics with a concentration on astrophysics.
3) Several years while I had a masters degree.
Astrology is pure superstitious bullshit. There is NOTHING to back it up, no evidence it works whatsoever, and no way to explain it if it did work. A passing bus has a greater gravitational pull on you than Jupiter does.
