What Are Your Thoughts on People Who Are Extremely Skeptical Toward Astrology?
They don’t believe in it, haven’t studied it, know nothing about it, but they answer questions in this category and berate the people who post their questions here? Do you think they realize how intolerant and rude they are being? Would you tell a Hindu or Buddhist their beliefs were crap?
…and your answer is an example of what I mean.
Re: wifey
No, it’s not a religion exactly but it is a belief system. And no, I wouldn’t tell a person they were good/bad based on astrology, that is too much of a generalization.
I think you could further argue that many people make the mistake of judging someone as good or bad based on whether they believe the same way as they do.
Re: Chainlightning: “If it’s not science, then it’s supersitition.” If your statement is true, then all belief systems are superstition. Actually, astrology is testable by the scientific method, just no one has done it. Since it’s a system of understanding which is subjective to each person, you have to learn and observe its principles for yourself. I began studying the signs and planets and their influences and interactions when I was 16. So I have been watching and observing people since then, and not ever saying to myself that Astrology was true before observing. I have watched people prove astrology to be correct to me again and again. Thats why I now believe in it. But I do appreciate that you asked what you would study about it instead of just bashing it immediately. I think it is the precursor of psychology, and that it’s an amazing tool for self understanding and helps relationships. Please take it from me, I’ve been observing now for over 13 years.
re: chain
I disagree that astrology is just divination, in fact, I think it has less value as a divination system than as a tool for personal understanding. It’s goal is for you to learn about yourself. Even if you disagree with it, it still makes you examine yourself which is not bad. What I want to know is, instead of quoting all this scientific research, why don’t you try looking into it yourself and make your own decision?

Very smart, normal people.
well… i thought i was the only person w/ a brain around here but i totally agree with you like why would anyone who r completely clueless about astrology r even browsing this section in the 1st place and trying to give their opnion on how much they dislike it like it matters to anyone. come on its you against 100′s of ppl lol but u kno ppl r just bored nowadays
i think they just don’t see how real astrology is.
I think it’s funny how other people try to tell you what to believe in
I think people who come on here to bash astrology are just being dumb, they obviously haven’t studied or really thought about the things they’re accusing, all I do is just thumb their answers down and move on.
If they want to come around here and look ignorant, then that’s all on them.
As for me, I’ll keep believing no matter what.
?
It doesn’t bother me at all, I just don’t discuss it with them. They are affected regardless if they believe in it.
it doesn’t affect me in the least unless it’s directed at me & in my face or in the face of someone I care about… then those people you mention will have a serious problem…
otherwise, peace… to each their own… no judgments… & I’d appreciate the same from them… that thumbs down tab makes those posts disappear quickly…
My my take on this is that they just don’t get what’s the big deal with astrology. I bet the majority probably have read a magazine or newspaper horoscope and just decided that this is so crappy. Yes they are right, the horoscope on the newspaper are stupid. There in so much more about astrology, I wish people would be a little more considerate.
I believe everyone is entitled to an opinion but I do think they shouldn’t put down something because they don’t accept or believe in it. People should be more openminded about certain issues especially beliefs. We’re not asking people to change themselves but just be understanding of other people and beliefs .
Well I don’t know much about it but its not like a religion or anything its just astrology …I mean would you tell a specific sign hes a bad or good person because of there qualities you see in them all becasue of astrology?
People who are skeptics of astrology (skeptics of anything actually) are usually just uninformed or misinformed. My opinion of them is that they are just the same as people who are big into astrology, they are probably intelligent interesting people who just havent taken the time to learn how amazing and inlightning astrology can be. Maybe we should take the time to explain it to them, if there open minded they might just continue to educate themselves!
I have no problems with belief systems. People believe that some sky god controls the universe, fine. Though to me it makes sense to believe in things that exist. For instance, I believe that education is the most important thing for our children’s future.
The problem I have is when people claim that beliefs are factual. But have no evidence that backs up these claims. They won’t even think that it’s possible to be mistaken or that it maybe something else. Open mindness works both ways. Astrology can’t be both a belief and a scientific fact.
I’ll put this to you. What gets “studied” when it comes to astrology? Do things get tested? Has anything been found to be false in these studies? I understand beliefs by nature can not be tested, but astrology’s claims can be. Any results?
What areas does astrology clearly succeed to do better than random chance? Or better than alternatives that maybe simpler or more likely? Which is type is the real astrology?
If it’s not science, it’s superstition.
Edit: My policy is attack the argument, not the arguer. Insulting others is childish. Unlike most people here, all my answers are open to view.
Yes, due to lack of evidence all belief systems are man-made superstitions. But let’s stick to divination which is what astrology really is.
You mention the scientific method. The simple version being:
# 1. Observe some aspect of the universe.
# 2. Invent a tentative description, called a hypothesis, that is consistent with what you have observed.
# 3. Use the hypothesis to make predictions.
# 4. Test those predictions by experiments or further observations and modify the hypothesis in the light of your results.
# 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until there are no discrepancies between theory and experiment and/or observation.
Further more, science demands consistency which astrology can’t do if it depends on the opinion of the observer. The testing must be totally repeatable by anybody. Lots of times.
There have been tests of astrology and it’s claims. Assuming you mean the “Western” type. Here is a link to one of the more well known tests that professional astrologers helped design. At the bottom are more publications.
There has been money and time spent on such testing. Thing is, even when astrologers fail their own tests, they can’t admit they were wrong.
One other thing that is wrong with astrology. It is a bigoted concept. Stereotyping, pigeonholing, and labeling people. Based on date of birth that no one has control over. This make it akin to racism and sexism. But for a believer, it’s acceptable bigotry. How these preconceived assumptions can be useful in the field of psychology does not make sense.
